Into this Silence of Watching

In my present reading of War and Peace there is a new perspective of life. I could see it through two insignificant characters.  One is the eight year-old boy and the other is a very old man. One is Natasha’s brother, heroine of the story, and the other one is the hero's (Prince Andrew) father. Tolstoy has knitted these characters into the novel in such fine fabric. They finely go along with the main texture of the novel. They cannot be removed from the larger texture. If these two threads are removed from the complete texture then it will unweave the whole fabric.

உசிலம்பட்டி காற்றாலையும், உள்ளூர் குயிக்சாட்டுகளும்

கள்ளிப்பட்டியானால் என்ன? காற்றாலைகளே இல்லாத உசிலம்பட்டியானால் என்ன? நம்முடைய கட்டுரையின் கருவின் கட்டாயத்திற்காக புனைவிற்காகவாவது ஒரே ஒரு காற்றாலையை நம்முடைய அசகாய வீரனுக்காக தற்காலிகமாக அங்கே நட்டுவைப்போமாக.   

ஒரே ஒரு முறை புனைவில் ஒரு சாகச வீரன் அரக்கர்களை வீழ்த்த முயன்று தோற்று போனான். அந்த தோல்விதான் புனைவை யதார்த்தமாக்கியது. ஒருவேளை அவன் அந்த அரக்கர்களை அழித்திருந்தால் அவன் ஏறக்குறைய ஐநூறு நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு ஞாபகத்தில் இல்லாமல் போய் இருப்பான். அவனுடைய வெற்றி கற்பனைக்கதையாக வாசிக்கப்பட்டு என்றோ மறக்கப்பட்டிருந்திருக்கும். அவனுடைய தோல்வியும் அவனுடைய பார்வையில் இருந்த மாய வித்தையும் அவனை கோமாளியாக என்றென்றைக்கும் நம் நினைவில் வைக்க வேண்டிய கட்டாயமாகிவிட்டது. காலம் காலமாக இருந்து வந்த அந்த சாகச வீரம் அசட்டுத்தனமாக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டது. இதையெல்லாம் ஏற்படுத்தியது அந்த படைப்பாளியின் கதையாடல். அதுவரையில் என்றும் இல்லாத ஒரு கதையாடலையும் கதையையும் வைத்துவிட்டுப் போய் விட்டான். அது தன்னில் இன்றும் தனித்துவமாக நிலைநின்று கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

I was reaching Velachary station. The speaker in the train announces that the station is the last one and requests the passengers to get down from the train. Such monotonous tone always irritates the passengers from station to station. Our professor often curses that female voice with an unparliamentarily word "*****". Now the question is what is special in it to speak about this incident in this essay? What is special in that announcement to register it in words? Yes, there is something special about my reaching Velachary and that ***** *****’s voice. The latter one is very less in significance. But the first one carries historical significance.

Piercing through the Wind

Nostalgic feelings of the nursery rhyme gush to one’s memory whilst the eye gazes at the night sky.  The floating pristine disc invites a dark man from Tamil Nadu, to sing the ever tiding "Nila Nila Odi Va". Rational faculties constantly fall short in studying this moment. Tales and songs usher one to cherish this unforgettable experience. Yet, trained culture merely reasons out ignoring nature. Culture of the learned demands only scientific observation of the starry night.
